Former Girard middle school teacher Gregory Yarbenet, already in prison for molesting a former student, was sentenced to an additional six to 18 months behind bars after he admitted molesting a second student.

Yarbenet, 56, formerly of the 4500 block of
North Creek Road, had been sentenced in April to 11 to 22 years in state prison for sexually assaulting the first female student. He appeared Monday in Erie County Judge Ernest J. DiSantis Jr.'s courtroom to plead guilty to charges of corruption of minors and indecent assault in the second case.

Yarbenet, a former science teacher, admitted he had indecent contact with a girl when she was in the sixth and seventh grades between March 2001 to April 2002 at
Rice Avenue Middle School.

DiSantis immediately sentenced Yarbenet following his plea.

The court hearing brought the case against the former teacher to a close.

Girard police first filed 16 charges against Yarbenet in April 2002 after the girl in the first case, now 17, reported that Yarbenet had indecent contact with her between February 1999 and June 2000.

At the time of the assaults, the girl was a seventh- and eighth-grader, and Yarbenet was her homeroom teacher and television-studio adviser.

In that case, Yarbenet pleaded guilty in DiSantis' courtroom March 4 to one count of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, three counts of indecent assault and three counts of corruption of minors before DiSantis. Other charges, including an additional count of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, were dropped as part of Yarbenet's plea deal. Judge John A. Bozza sentenced him to state prison in April.

The charges in the second case were filed in February by Girard Borough Police Patrolman Edward J. Podpora Jr. after the girl and her parents contacted police in December. The girl told authorities Yarbenet had engaged in indecent contact with the second victim on an almost-daily basis.

Yarbenet waived his preliminary hearing in May and said he planned to plead guilty.

The Girard School Board fired Yarbenet in February. He worked as a teacher for 32 years.
